Where Net Replacement Film (NRF) Falls Short in the Field

Net Replacement Film (NRF) has been promoted as a modern alternative to netwrap, but many farmers know from experience that it’s not always up to the job. Certain crops and conditions can quickly highlight its weaknesses, leading to frustration, wasted time, and more (expensive) plastic on the bale.

Here are some of the key challenges where NRF struggles:
  1. Straw and Stemmy Crops

NRF is not recommended for straw or stemmy crops eg. hay. Sharp stalks and stiff stems can easily puncture the film, leaving bales exposed and reducing protection. For anyone baling tougher material, this becomes a major limitation.   The only way to solve it being considerably more wraps on the bale, resulting in bale costs that are much higher than traditional netwrap.

  1. Low Dry Matter Crops

When dealing with wetter crops (DM <30%), bale weight increases significantly. This extra weight can cause the film to slip during the binding process, leaving the bale less secure and more vulnerable during handling. Instead of saving time, NRF in these conditions often creates extra hassle and high labour costs as problems have to be fixed ‘on the fly’.

  1. Dusty Conditions with High Dry Matter

On the flip side, very dry crops (DM >60%) bring another challenge. Dusty material can affect the tack of the film, making it harder for layers to bond properly. This compromises the integrity of the bale and can lead to failures during storage.  Reputational damage is major consideration here, bales that look great straight off the field can fail later in the season causing contractor reputations to be badly damaged.

NRF can look appealing on paper, out in the field it struggles with stemmy crops, wet crops, and dusty conditions.
The Real World Problem

What all of these examples show is that NRF isn’t truly universal. In many practical situations, whether it’s straw, wet crops, or dusty conditions, NRF struggles to deliver the reliability farmers and contractors require.

EZ Web: A Smarter Alternative

That’s where EZ Web makes the difference. It’s not a film in the same sense as NRF, and it’s not netwrap either. It’s an innovative new baling solution designed by farmers, for farmers, to handle the challenges that real world conditions bring.

Easy to remove: Simpler and quicker to remove than netwrap, saving time at feeding.

Recycling made simple: EZ Web can be recycled together with stretchfilm, no need to separate.

Designed for tough crops: EZ Web avoids many of the pitfalls that limit NRF, giving consistent performance across different crop types and conditions.

In Summary

While NRF can look appealing on paper, out in the field it struggles with stemmy crops, wet crops, and dusty conditions. The usual fixes mean adding more layers or using thicker film and that only adds cost, plastic, and waste.

EZ Web offers a smarter, easier, and more sustainable alternative that works with the crop, not against it.
