What is PPWR?

PPWR is a new regulation focused on reducing packaging waste, improving sustainability, and recycling packaging materials. It includes all packaging and packaging waste, regardless of industry. It’s part of the move towards a more circular economy, where packaging waste is reduced as much as possible.

What PPWR requires

Most of the new regulation’s requirements focus on sustainability and how easy it is to recycle the packaging you use for your pallets. For producers, distributors, and retailers, this means rethinking traditional solutions like corner boards and plastic straps and focusing instead on materials that are easy to apply, remove, and recycle.  Packaging should be:

  • Designed to be easily collected, sorted, and recycled at scale
  • Designed to minimise weight and volume while maintaining function
  • Made with minimal harmful substances
  • Made using recycled material

For distributors specifically, the new regulations state that they should verify that their packaging meets EU standards and that manufacturers have fulfilled their obligations. This means partnering with a trusted pallet wrap provider has become more important than ever.

Choosing packaging that stacks up under new requirements

As the new PPWR requirements continue to roll out, companies must think proactively about how to meet them. Reducing packaging materials while maintaining stability, ventilation, and quality is an especially large challenge for the fresh produce industry, where corner boards, plastic straps, and additional wrapping have long been the standard solutions.

Tama’s InnoVent® pallet wrap provides a go-to alternative. InnoVent® is designed to replace corner boards and straps during produce shipping, replacing multiple, bulky packaging materials with a single, lightweight solution that stabilises and ventilates as effectively as traditional methods.

It’s also designed with sustainability and recycling in mind. InnoVent® is:

  • Made entirely from a single material (polyethylene), simplifying removal and making it 100% recyclable after use
  • Designed to reduce packaging waste by approximately 90%
  • Packaged in compact rolls that increase the amount of packaging that can be transported in a single load – one truckload of InnoVent® can wrap the same number of pallets as 20 truckloads of corner boards and straps.

These advantages combine to provide an approximately 88% lower carbon footprint when using InnoVent® compared with corner boards and strapping.

Making the switch to sustainability

Over the coming years, the requirements for packaging recyclability under PPWR are set to become even more stringent. So the question isn’t whether to make the switch to more sustainable materials, but how to choose a solution that meets food shipping standards while also meeting the new sustainability obligations.

With InnoVent®, you get all of it: the sustainability and recyclability PPWR requires without sacrificing the stability and ventilation your pallets need, all from a single packaging material.
